Homeschool Art Program & Private Lessons

Program Information

**Please note that there has been some changes to the days and times for some groups starting with the Fall 2017 academic year.**

General Info/Policies

Mix Colors art studio offers an art education program for the Homeschooling community. If you are looking for a place to nurture your child’s creativity through the visual arts we can provide that. We aim to educate the arts in a safe setting that is non-judgmental, allows for individual exploration, and equips children with an appreciation for how art communicates a message. The classes will be taught by a former college art professor and professional artist. Please read Julia's bio on the Our Story page.

Our weekly classes run year-round in six-week sessions. The schedule of class sessions and meeting times are listed in each Grade/Age section. You can enroll any time if there is space in the class. There is no need to wait for the beginning of a session to enroll (we will pro-rate tuition). We offer drop-in classes as well. If there is no space in the class you want, please contact us for other options.

Each class meeting will offer group and individual instruction. This quality education setting will allow each student to develop their love of art while working at their own pace.

At the end of each session, the students will participate in an art show at the studio. Each of them will help in preparing their work to present.

You can register for classes through the Class Calendar or contact the studio. Sign up for the full academic year and receive a 5% discount. Please contact the studio for full year discount.

Homeschool families will enjoy the studio at anytime during their session for no additional studio fee.

Each new student to the studio will receive a sketchbook to work on their art at home.

We also want to stress that we want everyone to use their best judgment at all times and make a personal decision for you and your family based on the roads in your area and your feeling about driving to art classes. Even though we may be open for classes, please don’t feel like you need to travel to the studio if you are questioning the trip at all. We understand and you can make-up the class. The mission of Mix Colors art studio is for kids this age is to continue their art discovery and celebrate new concepts and techniques. Children this age acquire new information at a rapid pace and we want to use art to stimulate the information acquisition.

The children will deconstruct familiar subjects into geometric shapes that will allow them to "see" more in their subjects. Students will learn art concepts to improve and enrich their artwork. Children will learn that everything can be drawn using basic shapes and develop their contouring skills to make their subjects.

At this young age it is important to learn the proper use of a brush and color mixing, which will be done with a variety of mediums, which includes acrylics, pastels, paper, and inks on a variety of media such as canvas, paper, wood, and more. The children will learn to feel confident about their artwork and establish their practices to carry them to a higher level of application and exploration. There will be a great deal of time spent on both imaginative concepts and observation settings. It is very important at this age to work with guided and unguided concepts so that students can combine the two aspects in the future. It is important to see and notice details that can be translated into artwork of individualized compositions.

Children will learn about drawing techniques such as foreshortening, contour drawing, basic perspective, and size that help make their drawings look 3D.
